Background of the Study
Child marriage remains a significant issue in many rural parts of Nigeria, including Kaita Local Government Area (LGA) in Katsina State. According to recent reports, a large percentage of young girls in these areas are married off at an early age, depriving them of their right to education and the opportunity for economic and social development (Ahmed & Bello, 2023). The prevalence of child marriage is driven by cultural practices, poverty, and limited awareness of the negative consequences for girls' health and future prospects. Development communication, through strategic media campaigns, community dialogues, and educational outreach programs, can play a key role in addressing the root causes of child marriage. By shifting public attitudes, raising awareness of the harmful effects of early marriage, and empowering communities with the knowledge to make informed decisions, development communication can contribute significantly to ending child marriage in regions like Kaita LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Child marriage continues to be a pervasive problem in Kaita LGA, Katsina State, with numerous young girls being married before the age of 18. This practice severely limits their access to education, health care, and economic opportunities, often leading to lifelong consequences. Despite the existence of national laws prohibiting child marriage, cultural and social norms continue to perpetuate the practice. There is a need for effective development communication strategies to engage local communities in discussions around the harmful effects of child marriage and advocate for change. This study aims to examine the role of development communication in ending child marriage in Kaita LGA and assess its effectiveness in promoting behavioral change within the community.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
To assess the effectiveness of development communication in raising awareness about the negative impacts of child marriage in Kaita LGA.
To evaluate the role of media campaigns in changing community attitudes towards child marriage in Kaita LGA.
To explore the impact of community-based communication strategies in empowering local leaders and families to prevent child marriage.
1.4 Research Questions

What role do media campaigns play in changing public attitudes towards child marriage in Kaita LGA?
How do community-based communication efforts influence families and community leaders to take action against child marriage in Kaita LGA?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Development communication strategies significantly increase awareness about the harmful effects of child marriage in Kaita LGA.
Media campaigns lead to a positive shift in public attitudes and behaviors regarding child marriage in Kaita LGA.
Community-based communication initiatives reduce the prevalence of child marriage in Kaita LGA by empowering local leaders and families.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it provides insight into the potential of development communication to address the entrenched social issue of child marriage in rural Nigerian communities. The findings will contribute to the growing body of knowledge on using communication strategies for social change, particularly in the context of gender equality and children's rights. Furthermore, it will help policymakers, NGOs, and community organizations design more effective interventions aimed at ending child marriage in other similar communities across Nigeria.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus specifically on Kaita LGA in Katsina State, where child marriage is still prevalent. The study will explore the role of development communication in addressing this issue. Limitations include potential challenges in measuring the direct impact of communication interventions and the sensitivity of the subject, which may limit the willingness of some community members to participate.
